Clapping Game Pat a Cake

Clapping Game, Hand and Finger Play and Physical Play

Pat a cake is a traditional clapping game.

At School 08

Players: 2
Age: 9 and 10

The girls used a traditional playground clapping pattern, rather than the simple clapping movements used when this rhyme is played with babies.

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man,
Bake me a cake, as fast as you can.
Pat it and prick it and mark it with B,
And put it in the oven for baby and me.

This game was not observed, but demonstrated during discussion with a group of girls. One of the girls said that she learned this rhyme from her older sister, who is 14.
