At School 17

Three boys were making a go-cart four out of the five days researchers were present at School 17. They had drawn plans for the project and were assembling the body of the vehicle using a plastic chair back, wooden frame, axles and wheels. Tools used included hammer, nails, drill, screws, saws and the motor of a whipper snipper was to be used as the engine.

Researcher later filmed the boys as they were planning how to construct the steering mechanism and their intention was to trial it at the senior school when it was completed.

All of their work was self-directed and teachers only became involved when the boys asked for help to work out a problem they were having. It was obvious over the week that many confrontations arose between the three and that they spent much time negotiating and discussing the project.
