Boys at one school used drains as 'sound tunnels'.

Age: 9
Props: underground stormwater drains with open metal grills as covers

Two boys were sitting cross-legged on the covers of two stormwater drains at the edge of the P and F Oval. They took turns to yell into the drain.

When I asked them what they were doing, they said they were sending messages - you can hear each other through the drains.

If three boys are playing, they use three drain covers, and the middle boy receives messages from both ends.

Other boys said that these boys were the ones who had discovered that they could use the drains to send messages to each other.
