This is a commercial strategy game, using trading cards produced by the Konami Corporation of Japan. The description on one of the packs reads:
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME, two players face off in an all-out battle, engaging in a Match consisting of three duels. It will take skill, practice, strategy and luck to emerge victorious from the Match, as there are many factors. Players: can manipulate to vanquish their foe. The main battles are waged between incredible monsters split into an amazing 20 types, each with their own unique skills and fighting styles. In addition, players can use spells, set traps, change the battlefield itself, and even fuse two monsters together to form a monster of immense power!
The game is complex - each card has the name and picture of a character, its category, (e.g. Fire, Earth, Water, Wind, Light, Dark, Trap, Magic) its type (e.g. Beast, Spellcaster, Trap, Fiend, Fairy) and its effect, which outlines a number of steps the player must do to complete his move and the effect the card will have on the game. As each card is played, the opponent responds by planning his next move to take advantage or minimise the effects of the card.
Players: may only have 60 cards in their deck, but they can swap their cards around to build up the strongest deck possible. They can also trade cards with other players or buy extra cards. Cards can be bought in 'booster' packs of 9 for around $3, or there is a starter pack with a fully prepared deck for around $19.
As well as having a playing value according to how powerful a card is and the number of points it is worth in the game, cards also have a collecting value designated as Common, Rare, Super Rare and Ultra Rare.
The boys at this school keep their decks in small commercially-made Yu-Gi-Oh containers. (See photos)
