Soccer is a very popular game amongst the children and is played by any number of different groups at any time

At School 04

Players: 7
Boys
Age: 3
Props: 4 plastic 'wheelie' rubbish bins, rubber soccer ball

This group of boys was playing Football (Soccer), using four green plastic 'wheelie' bins as their goals. During the game, someone accidentally kicked the ball over the low cyclone fence at the edge of the oval, and it rolled across the road and down the fairly steep slope of the river bank. One of the female teachers on duty climbed over the fence and slid down the slope to retrieve the ball for the boys. There was no sense of it being a problem, and the teacher laughed about how she had to slide down the slope on her bottom, and how she thought she might end up in the creek herself.

The game begins when the boys choose a Captain for each team, and the Captains choose their players in turn. The game is played using the usual Soccer rules.

The boys in Queensland call Soccer 'Football', and call Aussie Rules Football 'AFL'.

At School 08

Players: 10
Boys
Age: 10-11
Props: Soccer ball, two pairs of trees

The boys were playing soccer on the grassed oval, right across the width of the oval, and using a pair of trees on each side for the goals. There were two teams of five players, which complies with the school's 'rule of 5' as there were no more than five players in each team. The game was played in much the same way as the sport, with a goalkeeper guarding each goal and each team trying to kick the ball between their trees to score a goal. The game was played with great energy, and a lot of calling and shouting. At one stage, three children were standing in one of the goals talking, and most of the soccer players shouted all together, "Get out of the goal. Get out of the goal" at them, until they moved away.

The boys said they really liked playing Soccer and played it most days, always in the same place.

The school has a special rule about how many children can play together at once. It's called the 'rule of 5', which means up to five children are allowed to play together in a group. For Soccer, this rule is bent to allow 5 players per team.
